Vertical 1080x1920: a native video for TikTok, Reels and Shorts

Why recropping a horizontal video always costs something, what a native vertical render changes, and an example at 1080x1920 and 60 frames per second.

A video shot in 16:9 and recropped to 9:16 loses three quarters of its width. You then choose what to sacrifice: the subject stays, the context goes. That is acceptable for a face; far less so for movement that crosses the frame.

A video rendered vertical makes no such trade, because it never existed in any other shape.

What recropping actually costs

Three things, in order of severity.

Composition. A framing designed for width does not transpose to height. What was balanced becomes cramped, and the eye no longer knows where to settle.

Resolution. Recropping means enlarging the part you keep. A centre crop of a 1080p source is only 607 pixels wide once reduced to 9:16 — then it is stretched back to 1080. The lost detail does not return.

Movement. An object that used to leave the frame sideways now leaves it sooner. On a trajectory that zigzags downward, half the passes end up off screen.

What a native render changes

Here the virtual camera is framed in 9:16 from the start, and the course is built for that shape: platforms fit the available width, the descent uses the height, and the camera follows the line of the course without ever losing the ball.

Output is 1080x1920 at 60 frames per second. That is the maximum resolution TikTok, Instagram and YouTube accept for this format, and the frame rate that keeps fast movement readable: at 30 frames per second, a ball crossing the frame in a third of a second leaves only ten positions, and the bounce becomes a jump.
